Round 14 of the 2014-15 GMP Ultimate Basketball League (UBL) competition proved to be a disaster for the locally-based teams.
The high-flying Parramatta Wildcats had only just been elevated to the top of the competition ladder but lost that spot immediately, thanks to a surprising 105-96 loss to the South Thunder.
Mitch Rueter led the Wildcats with 29 points and 12 boards, ahead of Adi Causevic with 25 points.
The Australian Chinese Basketball Association (ACBA) Dragons looked likely winners all game in their clash with the Sydney City Cobras but could not withstand a last-quarter rush from their opponents.
ACBA tried everything to regain momentum in the final quarter but despite having the last shot of the game, lost a cliff-hanger 91-89.
Egange Ayuk was tireless for ACBA, finishing with a superb 30 points and 22 boards, ahead of Danny Sidik with 28 points.
Parramatta’s development team Hoops Academy has been struggling to compete with the top teams all year and Saturday was no exception, with the youngsters falling 97-80 to the powerful Obilic.
Bob Zhou led the Academy with 18 points, ahead of Ashley Herbert with 14.
This week’s round is the last of the season and the two highlight games are both at 4pm, albeit at different venues.
The South Sydney Wolves take on South Thunder at Sutherland, whilst the ACBA Dragons take on the Sydney Royals at Auburn.
