Two outstanding performances from American Mitch Rueter have kept the Parramatta Wildcats in contention at the pointy end of the 2014-15 GMP Ultimate Basketball League (UBL) competition ladder.
Rueter grabbed a triple-double of 43 points, 11 boards and 11 assists on Saturday, as the Wildcats held off a determined Shire Slammers to grab a 112-95 win at the Auburn Basketball Centre.
Parramatta should then have been odds-on favourites to defeat a depleted Norwest Giants in Sutherland on Sunday but started at a pedestrian rate to trail 19-14 in the first quarter.
Rueter had been content to let his team-mates take up the workload in that term but rose to the challenge in the remainder of the game, finishing with 36 points and 16 boards.
That performance was enough to drive the Wildcats to a 90-79 win and keep them hot on the heels of the Glebe Magic.
Jake Wilson was the architect of Glebe's two wins on the weekend, finishing with a combined 72 points to continue his climb up the Top Ten Point-Scorers List.
The Wildcats face the erratic but sometimes brilliant South Thunder at 2pm this Saturday.
